With attitude

10.31.2011

Creativity with attitude and a wicked sense of humour always gets my attention. I stumbled across Division of Labor via Swissmiss and I'm in awe about their work. I obsess a bit about the two short videos below. It was for an advertising campaign for Nike. This is what they wrote about it:

Nike wanted to promote a new women’s cross training shoe, but had no money. (Yes, Nike, no money. Go figure.) So we came up with a couple video ideas that we thought might get some traction. This is another example of inexpensive content backed by no media dollars that got passed all over the web.

Tonight is...

Yay! Just a small movement we started in our household - we are definitely not planning on becoming completely vegetarian or vegan (although vegetarianism has appealed to me for a period in my life). Just to make life a bit easier and eat less meat. Because it's good for you. Because it's cheaper. Because it's greener. Because it's responsible.
Read more about the real movement here.
So far it is a success and it takes a lot of stress out of the cooking. Tonight we had tagliatelle pasta with a fresh basil pesto, olive tapenade and fried garlic. The husband cooked.
So, if you have more ideas of what to cook on Meatless Mondays, please leave a comment. If this gives you some inspiration to do it yourself, please spread the word. Us Pretorians can definitely do with less boerewors and steak...at least once a week.

Moving ground

10.30.2011

So, for the past months over weekends we've been doing some intensive gardening. We basically cleared everything out in our garden, except for two trees and a lavender bush. Thys also showed off his power tools and we jack-hammered our existing porch into oblivion. Here is the sort-of-end-result. Please ignore the building rubble, dog turds, half-naked husband and general lack of order. This is still a work in progress.

Everything you see here is new - all the plants, the paving (each block weighs 22kg) and off course the beautiful vegetable boxes - a gift from friends. We are quite happy with the way the space turned out and I think we will have many lazy summer afternoons and evenings here. Once again, we had a lot of help from our friends - they slaved away with us in the sun, stole plants from the complex and brought much-needed beers when we needed it.

Truth be told

May I never be content.
May I never be perfect.

Heartbreakingly beautiful

This month, as I drive through the purple-lined streets I am a bit overcome with emotion. The jacarandas are exceptional this year.

Overwhelmed

10.12.2011

This week, I am at a bit of a loss for words. Two things happened, I wanted to post about it and found myself sitting in front of the computer with nothing. Nothing to write, nothing to say because everybody said it. And I think it is fine, it's enough.
The first event was the passing of Steve Jobs and the second was the amazing Coldplay concert on Saturday. I think my words will spoil the emotions associated with both.
In the meantime I'm trying to survive the circus called the Building Industry, forever kicking, screaming and fighting. Sometimes it's just too exhausting.
So, I took a picture of the sunset this evening. Yes, to feel better. And yes, I did. So in a very cheesy way I would like to share it with you. It's like a promise that these crazy days will also pass and that everything will be fine in the end. Okay now, enough cheesy-ness for one evening.

Got my Lomography film back today. I fell in love all over again with the beautiful "mistakes", soft focus, double exposures and analogue-ness of my Diana.
